To me, learning the history behind your city is so fun, especially about how a town and an area was developed or founded years and years ago! I did some research on learning some of the history behind the making of Newark and you are going to want to read this one!
The land Newark stands on was purchased by E.B. Perrin in 1870. Newark received its name from a man named J. Barr Robertson who was the director of California Land Investment Co. The name “Newark” was not named after the city in New Jersey, it actually was named after a castle in Port Glasgow, Scotland named “Newark”.
In 1919, August Schilling founded Arden Salt Co. There were salt lands that were extended from Dumbarton Point to Santa Clara County. In 1923 Schilling had about 4,000 acres of the fresh salt pond and within time, Arden Salt Co. merged with Leslie California Co. in Redwood City. Soon they became one company and were called Leslie Salt Co. which was eventually bought out by Cargill.
After this, plans to start a new town started being talked about and once Santa Clara Valley Railroad was built in Newark, actions to put this plan in place. started to take place. Newark formed into a city by 1955, and once this town was built, you started to see hotels, businesses, barns, dance halls, and even greenery like trees and plants being planted throughout this new city. For the first time, there were Newark Police officers and firefighters. Wedgewood stoves were being manufactured and lead by Thomas and Martin Carter.
Newark has come a long way since it was given its name and Newark today holds a reputation for continuously moving forward and making improvements in their city. There is so much more to this city!
